Historical Background:

Nearly a decade ago, the Support Group started with 8 families and professionals.  Like any group, the Corvallis PDD/Autism Support Group's focus and goals have changed over the years.

As families come and go, we continue to grow.  Presently, we number over 100 families. From the very beginning, families in the Corvallis area have struggled with on-going frustrations with the education and service delivery system in Oregon.  Parents often feel isolated and lack current accurate information on the issues their child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) faces daily.  The support group is known as an informed group of families and professionals willing to make changes in our state.  We are seeking ways to effectively work with lawmakers, the medical community, Autism professionals and educators to change how Oregon educates children with ASD and to improve the way services are delivered to our children.

The support group is dedicated to bringing Autism Awareness to our schools and community.  LET'S FIND WHAT UNITES US, NOT DIVIDES US BECAUSE TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

One of the ways we have been most effective is by forming a collaboration between families and professionals as explained below:

Mission Statement:

To promote a family/education partnership which is accepted and  respected as beneficial for everyone - the child, the family and the schools - in order to ensure successful supported education.

Goals:

  • We strive for effective collaboration between educators and families
  • We are committed to ensuring all children receive an inclusive, integrated or main-streamed education appropriate to the special needs of the individual
  • We seek to identify and overcome barriers which prevent successful outcomes
  • We recognize family empowerment and involvement as a valued and necessary resource for a successful educational experience for all schools, students, and their families
  • We advocate for fair solutions district wide regarding the various educational issues and needs our children face in school

Guiding Principals:

  • We recognize families as part of the solution and the experts on their child/children
  • We acknowledge that the development of trust must be an integral part of a relationship between families and school
  • We support open communication so families and professionals feel free to express themselves
  • We promote an atmosphere of acceptance by which culture, traditions, values, and diversities of families are honored
  • We respect the knowledge, skills and experience families and professionals bring to this collaboration
