A Message from Steve Edelson, Ph.D.
Associate Director, Autism Research Institute
Autism has historically been considered a life-long disability. A few years ago, we rarely heard of a recovery or near-recovery from autism.
But in the past three years, the Autism Research Institute began receiving letters, faxes, emails and phone calls from parents and from professionals reporting recovery or near-recovery. Almost all of these reports involve using the biomedical treatments developed through ARI sponsored research, and in many cases, in combination with ABA.
These children now play with their same-aged peers and have real friends, they are doing very well in school, their behaviors are socially and emotionally appropriate, they communicate normally, and no one suspects the child once had a potentially life-long disability.
Dr. Rimland is thrilled to hear each and every report of recovery. This has been his life's goal, that is, to defeat autism, and to defeat autism now!
At the Autism Research Institute we have a database of recovered and near recovered children. We have nearly 1,100 children, and it's growing steadily. The parents who signed on our website want to tell the media how well their children are doing.
This website contains two very special features.
The first one is a video narrated by Dr. Caroline Gomez, the co-Director of Auburn University Autism Center. One of her clients, Slater, received DAN! biomedical interventions. Dr. Gomez states that this is the only child she has seen in 20 years who has lost the diagnosis. In this video, you will see her administer the ADOS to Slater, the gold standard in autism diagnosis, before and after he received the DAN! treatment approach. This documentation shows that Slater has recovered from autism in only 10 months.
The second feature on this website is the videotaped presentations from our October, 2006 Seattle Defeat Autism Now! or DAN! conference. The presentations are divided into 4 parts, with two parents on each video. Each parent describes his or her child before biomedical intervention, a brief description of the treatments they tried, and a description of how their child is doing these days. As you will see, the before and after videos clearly document the child's recovery from autism.
If you have a recovered or near recovered child, please let us know by completing the Internet form at: www.AutismIsTreatable.com
Please share this website address with other parents and with professionals.
